I heard this is the so-called second season of Full Metal Panic without the mechas and Gonzo being involved with this. So is it necessary to watch the first season in order to fully undestand the second season?

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
I'm in the process of watching this series, and so far it's pretty funny.

Not at all. Although there are some moments when having seen the first series will give you more insight into what is happening... things like the characters personalities and such. The episodes when Tessa comes would probably be the most confusing for someone who hasnt seen the original, because a lot of characters come and you wont really know anything about them. But I think it can still be enjoyed thoroughly despite this.

Full metal panic is actually kind of strange enjoyable but strange. Sagara is the second coolest anime guy ever. Maybe Captain harlock is cooler. Anyway the dub of Full metal panic is good and Yeah you should watch it before fumoffu but I like Fumoffu better.

I had no idea there was a spinoff/sequel to Full Metal Panic. Excuse me a second... *Does a double-back-flip.
It seems every single one of my favorite animes were surprises. FMP may be the biggest surprise I've ever had. On the surface it sounds like a pretty dumb anime (dumb name right?), but actually watching the show reveals its incredible emotional depth. At times it is one of the best executed dark animes I have ever seen, and at other times it imitates Ranma 1/2 and Love Hina, with hilarious results. A friend of mine actually flipped out of his chair laughing and very nearly broke his nose (he's ok now) while watching this show. While this anime may not neccessarily be dangerous to your health, it is again very surprising, by the 7th episode Chidori has progressed farther than Akane did in 7 seasons with Ranma 1/2 (in terms of maturity and character growth), and the anime just simply has NO SET genre. It works within formula functions at times (to which it excels), and seems to change from pure mech to pure romantic comedy sporadically, and just when you think its a fun, lighthearted series, it gets weird and dark, and the effect is unique and (in my opinion) amazing. I'm generally a fan of old-school anime, but FMP is definitely one of the best new animes. Its currently my number 3 favorite anime.
So, yeah, its worth watching.

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu seems to be a waste to me, especially when FMP could have been continued as a serious series, explaining the whole 'whispered' thing for example.
Instead, we have Sagara with 70% of his brain cells removed, and the series has been turned into high school humor drama.
Sagara was NOT that stupid, or crazy in the original series. I'm honestly really disappointed by the way they've gone with FMP.
