How and why did Toguro become a 'demon'?

He became a demon after winning the Dark Tournament. He was given one wish by the commitee and it was to become a demon so that he could always have strength and never turn old.

Ok here is a Tenchi OAV Question. Im going to put spoiler tags on it just incase it spoils something for those of you who have not seen it.
