  • Comments: This is probably the VERY BEST video I ever made with my camcorder and VCR. Because of that, I will never remaster it with my computer. I'd rather maintain its integrity as an excellently-edited linear/analog video. Maybe it can't stand up to the technical perfection of today's digital work, but it's one of the best examples of a well-made linear video in existence, and I don't want to lose that by making it technically perfect. (Kind of like how George Lucas changed a bunch of the visual effects in Star Wars. I preferred the original, didn't you?)

You may wonder how I got those "subliminal" clips done without the aid of a computer to edit it. Well, I picked some very flashy shots from Gunsmith Cats and El Hazard, in which stuff was already flickering by very fast. And for the computer screen images of the "subliminal messages," I created them on my computer, then just aimed my camcorder at the screen and took some clickON-clickOFF very fast shots of the screen. It would have been much easier with a digital camcorder, but this was an old model that used VHS tapes. Talk about triumph under adversity.

A brief remark about theme and intent:
At the time I made this video, I was still focusing largely on lyric-matching. I really think editing in general has gone through trends. Before Y2K, lyrics guided the choice of clips in many editors' videos much more often than nowadays. I have since developed a more empathic sense of communicating to an audience through things like rhythm, tempo, and emotion. But this video fit right into the scope of what was being done in 1999, and definitely pushed the edge as far as linear editing goes. The feeling I wanted to convey in this video was just a fun-loving sense of romantic comedy. That's my favorite genre of anime, and it shows in some of the clip selection and the overall tone of the video. The video is intended to be a lighthearted little romp that makes the viewer feel good.

After making this video, I knew I'd reached my limit and could never advance further without a computer. I started to save up for a Mac G4. I made a few more linear videos in 1999, but in 2000 I got the new computer and kissed linear goodbye.
