  • Comments: I've wanted to do this video for a long, long time, before Dido got popular on Eminem's coattails. To me, it fit the story of Fushigi Yuugi perfectly, with some twists. I'm glad I waited over a year and developed my editing skills before doing it, because this was a tough video, both thematically and technically.

Basically, I wanted Yui to be the one singing the song. She is telling Tamahome to forget about her and be happy with Miaka...but of course, on some level she doesn't really mean it. There is a very strong undercurrent of sarcasm and bitterness when she talks about how "sweet" and "pretty" Miaka is. This culminates in her telling Tamahome that his "best friend" (Hotohori) has spent the night with Miaka...Yui then taunts him, saying "Now how do you feel?" The chorus section that occurs after that is darker and less lovey-dovey than the one that had come before, as a consequence of Miaka's infidelity.

...And yet Yui still pushes Tamahome back to Miaka, saying that it's too late. None of the three characters in the love triangle are portrayed flatteringly in the video; Yui is bitter and spiteful, Miaka is unfaithful, and Tamahome spends a lot of the video looking shocked and helpless.

As you can tell, this is a VERY lyric-driven video. The lyrics tell a very specific scene-by-scene story in some parts (one that is a more twisted, darker variation of the love story told in the actual anime), and you probably won't get as much out of it if you don't catch the words.

This video was a lot of fun to make because I got to take the footage out of context and create sequences that have an entirely different meaning than they did in the anime.

The ending sequence is *mostly* random fading and overlaying, but there some scenes in there that are in context.

I avoided the temptation to have Yui lip-synching the song, especially because she is specifically addressing Tamahome, but I decided that telling the story entirely in images would be more dramatic.

Since the lyrics are so critically important to the video, here they are:

    So you're with her
    And not with me
I hope she's sweet, and so pretty
I hear she cooks delightfully, a little angel beside you
So you're with her, and not with me,
Oh how lucky one man can be
I hear your house is smart and clean,
Oh how lovely with your homecoming queen
Oh how lovely it must be...

When you see her sweet smile baby, don't think of me
When she lays in your warm arms, don't think of me

So you're with her, and not with me, I know she spreads sweet honey
In fact your best friend, I heard he spent last night with her
    Now how do you feel

When you see her sweet smile baby, don't think of me
And it's too late and it's too bad, don't think of me
Oh it's too late and it's too bad, don't think of me

Does it bother you now all the mess I made
Does it bother you now the clothes you told me not to wear
Does it bother you now all the angry games we played
Does it bother you now when I'm not there

When you see her sweet smile baby, don't think of me
When she lays in your arms, don't think of me

Special thanks to Quu for the Suzaku box set.

And this will be my last FY video, I promise :Þ
