  • Comments: I made this video on my dad's laptop in hotel rooms while on extended business travel in Phoenix, Arizona.

I started watching the American TV show "Dead Like Me" not too long ago, and in the first season, this weird, eerie song plays at the end of most episodes. I tracked it down and decided to make a video to it, but wasn't quite sure what anime could capture the feel of it. Tsunami Jones suggested Gankutsuou (an anime reimagining of The Count of Monte Cristo), which has a very unique visual style to it, and after watching it, I agreed that it would make a good match. The song, however, didn't really have very coherent lyrics, and a web search didn't turn up a whole lot -- just a lot of obviously wrong transcriptions of the lyrics. I'm pretty sure that only about 1/3 of the song is actually sung in English, and I have no idea what the rest of it is.

Anyway, my approach to this video was similar to my old Dreams Come True video, where a few small bits of the lyrics matched up with the footage, but mostly I treated the vocals like another instrument, and basically made an instrumental video. I had a few ideas for effects that I briefly considered incorporating, but in the end, I decided to keep it simple -- after all, the creators of the anime did more than enough effects work already. I tried to give the video some semblence of a story, so it basically turned into a character profile of Edmond Dantes/Gankutsuou and the darkly beautiful world he inhabits. Appearing briefly are a few of the main characters he interacts with and his old enemies whom he takes revenge upon.

It is probably a bit easier to follow if you've seen the anime or at least know the basic story of The Counte of Monte Cristo, but in the end, my main goal was to match up the trippy visuals with the music.

The title (and final shot of the video) is a reference to The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. There's no real reason for this other than the fact that I'm a Dark Tower fanatic :P

    Winner, Otakon 2k7, Dramatic/Serious category
